Located in the mountainous region south of the ancient capital of Asuka, the town of Yoshino is place of deep spiritual and cultural significance in the history of Japan. Yoshinoyama, an ancient temple district constructed along a ridge line in the town of Yoshino, has for centuries been a base for ascetic mountain training and a gateway to the pilgrimage routes that weave through okuyamato or the "deep mountains of Nara". In 2004, the area of Yoshinoyama was designated a UNESCO World Heritage area as part of the "Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes of the Kii Mountain Range." In this experience, participants will receive a guided tour on foot of the Yoshinoyama area by a local English language-speaking resident. The area's deep history, culture, and various significant locations will be introduced over the course of the tour. Estimated walking distance: About 7KM Elevation change over the course: About 80 meters uphill and 500 meters downhill.

It is highly recommended guests stay the night in one of Yoshinoyama’s many guest houses to fully immerse themselves in the area’s special atmosphere of nature and history.
