Feel the history and culture in the Primeval Forest and enjoy a rare opportunity with a professional guide!

Kasuga Primeval Forest is located behind Mikasayama (Mt. Mikasa), the sacred mountain of Kasuga Taisha Grand Shrine. After hunting and logging activities were prohibited here (because it is part of the sacred grounds of the shrine), the area has been preserved and maintains its pristine appearance despite having nonetheless been subject to human interventions for over one thousand years. Kasuga Taisha Grand Shrine rituals are still carried out within the Kasuga Primeval Forest, and it exists as a place of worship that is an extended part of Kasuga Taisha Shrine. As a result of this, it was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1998 as one of the cultural assets of the ancient capital of Nara.

On this tour, we will be embarking on roads that are currently normally restricted from entry. The roads are carpeted in moss because not many people pass along them. Slowly breathe in deep the forest air amid the tall trees - and spend a peaceful and gentle time in this forest.

How might we manage this forest whilst preserving its primeval appearance?

What efforts can be made to coexist with the sacred deer of Kasuga Taisha Grand Shrine, who roam wild in this forest?

As we walk, let us hear from the staff of The Society for the Future of Kasugayama Primeval Forest, an association which is actively conserving and managing the forest.

Why not take a break from your busy daily life and spend some quality time in this deep forest?
